Ferndale

Located in Whatcom County, Ferndale is home to approximately 14,026 Washington residents. This city was established in 1972 and was named in honor of the ferns that used to surround the local school. However, it’s first residents called the town Jam. The city was incorporated in 1907.

There’s always something fun to do in Ferndale and members of the community enjoy gathering for festive occasions. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Music Festival each year at the end of August. At the end of July, you can take part in the Old Settlers Picnic. The community comes together for a parade and a 5K race. In May, residents clean out their closets for a community wide garage sale. Downtown Ferndale comes alive in October for the annual Trick or Treat celebration.

Students in this area are served by the Ferndale School District. This district is comprised of six elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. They also manage an early learning center. This district enrolls approximately 4,700 students annually in grades pre-k through five.

Elementary schools include Beach Elementary School, Cascadia Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Custer Elementary School, Eagleridge Elementary School, and Skyline Elementary School. Other schools are Vista Middle School, Horizon Middle School, Windward High School, and Ferndale High School.

Ferndale High School has an active sports department that offers seasonal sports opportunities. Spring sports include baseball, golf, softball, soccer, tennis, and track. Fall sports include bowling, cheer, cross country, equestrian, football, soccer, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Winter sports include basketball, bowling, and wrestling.

The percentage of residents with a high school diploma or higher is 88.4 percent. The percentage of residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher is 25.3 percent.

The average high temperature is 63 degrees in July and August, but it does get as high as 75 degrees in August. The average low temperature is 38 degrees in December, but it does drop to 33 degrees in December and January. The month with the most precipitation is November with 5.2 inches.
